Who am I? My name is Jerry Bair. I’m an ACTION Certified Personal Trainer, Spartan SGX Level I coach, Marine Corps veteran, and I love helping people train for the challenges that encompass this awesome sport of obstacle course racing.
My Story
When I entered the world of obstacle course racing in late 2019, I had no idea there were coaches for the sport. On a challenge from a friend, I signed up for the Killington Beast as my first race and knew that I quickly had to get my shit together.
I found out over the next several months that training would take a lot of time – time that was hard to find between time with my wife, time with my kids (6 and 3 at the time), house work, and of course, my day job.
I tried to wing it and do things on my own. I pieced together and performed workouts from various OCR sites, ran at least one long run every week, and began to piece together equipment I would need for training like a 60 lb bucket, a sandbag, and a spear. I was a Marine, so I thought I could get away with it like I did in my early 20s when I would just pound beers the night before and go out for a 6-mile PT run the next morning. No big deal, right?
As I did these things though, I began to encroach on my work and family time. I was excited about racing, but without a solid game plan and someone to give me feedback and course correction, I began to hit some major roadblocks. I overtrained. I under-prepared. I neglected warmups and stretching. I eventually became overwhelmed, tired and irritable, which impacted time with my wife and kids, and hurt my work performance. Meanwhile, the house fell apart because I didn’t keep up with my responsibilities. Mentally, I had several times where I just felt like a zombie walking around the house. It was a mess!
Frustrated and at the end of my rope, I decided to hire a coach.
Late May of 2020, I knew that I was in over my head. The kids were not going back to school anytime soon because of COVID, summer was right around the corner, and I needed a new game plan.
I had read briefly about Spartan SGX coaching to prepare for races, so I decided to look up coaches in Maine. There weren’t many, but when I finally found one, I locked him in.
Within a week of hiring him for my own personalized OCR coaching, I was dialed in and reinvigorated. Ready to attack. Almost instantly, my sanity was restored. My training matched the time I had available and was flexible. I also knew that as life changed – school vacations, quarantines, etc. – my coach would be there to improvise and adapt with me. More importantly, he had my back and gave me the wisdom and drive I needed to succeed.
The Root Cause of my Problem
After my coaching started, I realized that “winging it” had been the wrong way to go all along. Sure, I could’ve learned through months or years of trial and error, but at what cost?
How much money would I waste on race entries, gear, and so on only to end up hurting myself and having to reschedule or cancel races?
How much money would I spend on physical therapy visits because I didn’t have a coach giving me feedback on form and technique?
How much time would I waste on Google finding and completing workouts that are irrelevant or inefficient for the type of race I’m doing?
How much would my self-confidence suffer because I had no accountability when I felt like not doing a workout?
How much more negative impact would this inefficient training strategy have on my home and work life?
With my own personal strategy, I was opening the door to a world of hurt. And being as challenge-driven as I am, there was no one to stop me and say, “Hey, maybe we should dial it back this week or switch gears to this type of cycle.”
There was also no one to say, “Hey, this is the time in your training to go all out, so let ‘er rip!”
I had the passion for OCR, but no Mickey in my corner saying, “You’re gonna eat lightning and you’re gonna crap thunder!”
With personalized OCR coaching, I learned what was possible with my training and it opened my eyes to a whole new world (whoops, how’d that Disney reference get in here?).
The OCR coaching I received came with structured weekly workout programming to build me up progressively to race day.
It was personalized in that it took into account my available time to train, my occupation and lifestyle, as well as any previous or existing injuries/conditions that I had. If any of those circumstances changed throughout training, I had the ability to communicate that with my coach and update my plan accordingly.
As I went through my OCR training, I received feedback on what went well and what sticking points I needed help on. I also met with my OCR coach monthly to talk about my overall progress, potential challenges, and how I’m feeling about upcoming races.
With my fitness watch and other trackers, my training was automatically pulled into various portals, and my coach could see when I stuck to my workout programming or if I missed a day and could be held accountable to that.
It was structured, motivating, and empowering… So much so that a year later, I felt the calling to make a difference and help OCR athletes in the same way that my OCR coach had helped me…
